Overcoming Menopause with Chinese Medicine, by Antonia Balfour, L.Ac.

More and more women are turning to Chinese Medicine for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, particularly after recent concerns regarding the safety of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Recent research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that H
RT may lead to an increase in the risk of heart disease, breast cancer, stroke, and blood clots. HRT has also been linked to gallstones and gallbladder disease. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are natural therapies offering significant relief from the debilitating symptoms women experience as they go through menopause without the risks associated with more conventional treatment.
When Roslyn Samet began going through menopause, she experienced major discomfort from hot flashes – not only at night, but frequently during the day, sometimes as often as once or twice an hour. “I really didn’t feel good about taking hormones,” said Samet. “Cancer runs in my family and I didn’t even consider HRT as an option. It seemed so unnatural to me – I just refused to do it”. Click here to read more…

I’m a reporter for the national health magazine Shape (published by AMI in New York), and I came across this blog while researching a story about the growing popularity of alternative medicine. Apparently, 1 in 3 Americans now use some form of complementary/alternative medicine, according to the National Institutes of Health.
I’m looking to interview a woman who has used chinese herbs to treat PMS or allergies migraines.
We’re mainly interested in understanding why she chose alt. therapy over conventional medications, and what the experience has been like. Interviews are conducted by phone and should take no more than 20 minutes.
Interested subjects should:
- be between the ages of 22-40
- be willing to submit a head shot
- not otherwise be involved in the CAM world
Know anyone who might want to talk?
Story deadline is April 5.
Many thanks,

Thanks for asking. I’ll pass this on to some patients who may be interested. Good luck with your story!

One of the many reasons why alternative medicine and complementary medicine have gained in popularity is due to the many negative side effects of conventional drug therapies; that, in addition to risky, invasive conventional medicine procedures. Good to know that more people are turning to natural healing means these days. Thanks for sharing the great blog post.
